Kākano Youth Arts Collective
Kākano Youth Arts Collective developed from a pilot programme in 2013 as a response to the needs of some of the most vulnerable and marginalised young people in West Auckland. Since then it has grown into a hugely successful initiative and changed the lives of many young people.
Kākano provides a safe and unique creative learning space for young people [ages 12 - 20yrs] who have experienced a huge amount of adversity. Kākano means seed. Our art tutors look for the tiniest spark of artistic interest in our young people and grow this, using multidisciplinary and innovative arts practices. The results are often fairly immediate, and very meaningful to the young people. Through Kākano these rangatahi have the opportunity to develop their art practice, their confidence and self-worth and forge a better future for themselves.
