Love Your Look - Joanna Giles (BA) Style & Makeup
Hi, I'm Joanna Giles, Personal Style Consultant & Makeup Artist from Love Your Look
I'm really like a Fairy God Mother...
I teach women how to look great & feel confident.
My dream is for every women to love the way she looks.
I believe every women is beautiful.
Beauty is not a particular size, shape, age, skin or hair color. Western Media is WRONG! You don't need to lose weight to look beautiful!
So 19 years ago, I used the research skills from my BA, to research the top Image consultant systems in the US and UK & created Love Your Look: The Feel-Good Style System for Real Women.
This is the easy, simple, effective 3 Step System to teach women
1. What Works For You: so you can highlight your assets & quietly camouflage any problem areas (so that's your best colors, clothes shapes, necklines, accessories, hairstyles, makeup)
2. How To Find It In The Shops
3. How To Put It Together
So you can consistently look great and feel confident, every day.
I also train new and established Stylists to use the Love Your Look system.

What Previous Students Have Said...“I would like to say a BIG thank you for running the course. I for one started the course as a ‘Frumpy Frauline” and only weeks later feel like the “Yummy Mummy” that you helped create...it’s a really great feeling to walk into my wardrobe and select pretty much anything and know I will feel and look good...what a fab way to start the day...”
“...everyone’s noticed my new look. I have never before had so many positive comments on my appearance (comments ranging from ‘You’ve lost weight’ to ‘You look amazing’ to ‘Can you help me look like you?’) Doing the Style Course was great, I learnt so much...’ Lynda
“I feel that I’ve found my style again, a style which got lost somewhere between weight gain and children! It’s been such a boost to feel better about my clothes and to actually enjoy them again...” Bridget

Confidence Comes From Loving Your Look
Daisy Seely discovers Joanna Giles is no stranger to insecurities or self-consciousness. Using her past struggles as motivation, Giles devotes her professional life to helping women love themselves.
Professional image consultant Joanna Giles lives in Christchurch, has family, a religion and self-confidence that is highly contagious.
I leave my meeting with her feeling refreshed and smiling. One often forgets how far a compliment can go, and Giles gives many.
Contrary to what some people may think about image consultants, Giles has not always been a fan of her own appearance. As a young teenager, she was diagnosed with anorexia. Having always been a high-achieving sprinter and an emerging athletics talent, Giles’s identity was rocked when she sustained a serious injury and was no longer able to compete.
“I had been in record-breaking teams,” she says. “It had been my life and all of a sudden I couldn’t do what defined me, and I lost a lot of confidence.”
Giles’s anorexia began immediately after her injury. She describes the initial onset as a scramble to control something in her life.
“I felt out of control so I started controlling what I ate, or more to the point what I didn’t eat,” she says.
She remembers then becoming focused on her image and disliking how she looked.
Giles’s eating disorder developed quickly. “I lost so much weight I would pass out, and fall off my bike, on the way home from school, and my periods stopped. I got down to a weight where my body wasn’t functioning anymore,” she says.
For six months, Giles’s anorexia worsened. As she was eating less, she began to realise she was quickly losing control of her eating disorder. “When you get to the point where it controls you and you don’t control it, it gets pretty scary,” she says.
Giles describes the initial control as something that made her feel good, but as her body deteriorated, so did her ability to control it.
She did have help from her family and doctors, but ultimately Giles feels as though she was healed when she found God.
“I do think that God healed me then,” she says. “One day I was thinking a certain way and then the next, I wasn’t. Which doesn’t happen with anorexia; usually it is like alcoholism and you have it for life.”
Giles smiles as she talks about her struggles with her eating disorder, her happiness coming from her obvious love for life. She now follows her Pentecostal faith with the Revival Fellowship. She has always had a religious background but chose to join the fellowship at 21 – a time she jokingly calls her “rebirth”.
“Life is so much better without the eating disorder,” she says.
Giles admits to using memories of her image struggles as a teenager to understand how people can feel about the way they look.
She has always been a fashion lover and usually bonded with friends and her mother over shopping trips and dressing up. She loved experimenting as a teen and would spend her clothing budget on a variety of trends. Make-up and beauty products then became part of her life when she began working at Aloette while studying classics at university.
Giles enjoyed the practical and social side of the job, and after university she was given the role of South Island manager, a position that took her away from the front line of working with people, she says. In the following years, she met her husband and started a family.
After a year of staying at home with her baby, Giles began to do private make-up and styling jobs before starting her own company, Cosmetic Imaging Services, in 2002. She then started offering special occasion make-up services, personal presentation workshops at schools, and was invited by Hillmorton High School to tutor classes within the adult education programme.
Last year, Giles renamed her company Love Your Look. She says it better represents the benefits of her classes and private sessions.
“Every woman is beautiful and is perfect the way she is now, and if I show them a few tricks of the trade, then they can see how beautiful they are,” Giles says. “The idea is that people love their look and love themselves.”
Giles usually has three types of clients: mothers and their daughters, women starting back at work after maternity leave and women nearing or in retirement.
Mothers often wish that they had had advice as a teenager and are now giving their teenager the opportunity to ask questions, Giles says.
“Other clients have always wanted to learn certain things, and never have. They feel now is the time to finally get some tips.”
Giles’s advice is based upon basic principles surrounding cut and colour of clothes. She assesses people’s body shapes and focuses their fashion choices on accentuating assets rather than hiding parts that they dislike. People are either categorised as a curve, soft curve or straight body type. She offers wardrobe de-junking, personal shopping, styling and make-up lessons based around the body shape principles.
For Giles, the job has both positives and negatives: “I love making people feel good – seeing the look on their face when they look in the mirror and see how amazing they look,” she says. “But, the hardest part is seeing people struggle with their body issues and realising that I can only help people when they are ready to be helped.”
Many people punish themselves, and only buy clothes after they lose weight, Giles says. “They are basically saying they’re not worth it right now. I’m trying to undo this mentality and try and encourage people to look after themselves now.”
Giles describes herself as a bubbly, caring person who likes to educate people. For me, she is an inspiration to women. She motivates women to love their look regardless of their ages, shape or size.
• Love Your Look classes through Hillmorton High School (community education) start from just $79 per person. Giles also offers private sessions at her studio and clients’ homes. For more information phone 385 5485/027 484 2318 or email jgcosmetics@gmail.com.
