Penny Tompkins and James Lawley are leading authorities on the use of self-generated metaphor for personal and professional development. They are the developers of Symbolic Modelling using the Clean Language of David Grove. Their book, Metaphors in Mind, is a comprehensive guide to their approach, and is supported by a training DVD, A Strange and Strong Sensation. They have written over a hundred articles which are freely available on their website: cleanlanguage.co.uk.
Penny was joint Managing Director of a company manufacturing oil field equipment for 18 years. In that time the company grew to over 300 employees with sales offices in the Middle and Far East. James worked as a senior manager in the computer industry, managing $100 million projects, before becoming an independent consultant.
Penny and James are married and live in London. They started their coaching/therapy/consultancy business in 1993 and continue to train throughout the world. They are neurolinguistic psychotherapists and supervisors registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Having supervised coaches from the Institute of Directors, Ashridge Management College and University of Surrey Business School, Penny and James were appointed honorary members of the Association Of Coaching Supervisors.
They have been consultants to a wide range of organisations and companies as diverse as the Yale University’s Child Study Center, the NASA Goddard Space Center, GlaxoWelcome and the Findhorn Spiritual Community in Scotland.
Recently James has acted as a research consultant supporting several PhD students. He is co-author of several peer-reviewed academic papers which have used Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling as a qualitative research methodology.
