Sanctuary Mountain

At 3,400 hectares, Sanctuary Mountain is home to many of New Zealand’s at risk and endangered species like the takahe, kokako, giant weta, and western brown kiwi. Sanctuary Mountain is protected by a 47km pest-proof fence – the longest of its in the world. The scale and scope of this project is only possible through the generosity and unwavering commitment of the many members of the community: the landowners, local iwi, and local residents who all come together to support the conservation efforts on Maungatautari.

Sanctuary Mountain also runs a tourism arm to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and enhancing the ecosystem of Maungatauari and to help fund conservation projects. We have a robust education programme for all levels and we are running this Open Day event to invite all educators to our facility and experience Sanctuary Mountain before Term 1 begins.
