Treehouse Shakers

Treehouse Shakers was founded in New York City in 1997 and has created and performed 16 original dance-plays for young audiences and adults in theaters, festivals and schools across the nation. The company is committed to creating work that encourages people to experience their feelings and their connection to the greater community. Our work is sometimes the first performance many young people experience. We want to sharpen their aesthetics as they are entertained, challenged, and engaged, while at the same time expanding their knowledge of various art forms. We have built our repertory to carefully address every age level within youth programming, serving babies to teens. We are building audiences who are creative-thinkers and hopefully life-long theater enthusiasts.

Currently, Treehouse Shakers has six original performances for young audiences on a rotating tour across the nation including: Animal Rhythms, Let’s Talk About IT!, a piece for teens, Hatched, for the youngest viewers ages 0-6, about baby animals and their life on the farm, Under the Tangle, about an orphaned young girl who becomes trapped in an enchanted labyrinth for ages 8 +, Olive & Pearl for ages 2-5, and The Boy Who Grew Flowers, adapted from the Barefoot Book of the same name for ages 5-10., and Flutter for Babies ages 6-18 months, to premiere in Spring 2021.

We tour nationally, partner with local schools and non-profits to provide thousands of low-cost tickets to underserved youth and families, and currently have several programs for young people throughout China. Helping solidify our role in the American theater scene, we were the first U.S. company to tour a dance-play specifically for babies, and remain one of the few making work specifically for the early years. Complimenting performances, THS provides teacher trainings and residencies for students that focus on the art of storytelling through dance, theater, and writing.
