The 2nd “Research for Impact” Workshop

Overview

Research for Impact is an academic practice that promotes the development of skills which are grounded in rigorous and relevant research, and that contribute significantly to both science and practice. Nowadays, most management researchers (PhDs and faculty) are challenged to demonstrate ‘Research for Impact’ capabilities in their work. However, current training for management PhD students and Early Career Researchers does not sufficiently develop the skills required to become successful researchers in ‘Research for Impact’ within Information Systems.

Join us for an immersive two-day workshop titled "Research for Impact," designed specifically for any management domain PhD students. This workshop aims to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world impact by equipping early career researchers and PhDs with the tools, techniques, and insights necessary to ensure their work has resonance beyond the academic realm. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from top academics that engaged in designing solutions as well as present their research and receive feedback from senior academics on how to position their work for greater impact. As part of this skills development, the workshop will offer insight into publishing in ‘focus on practice’ academic outlets, engaging in contributions to professional media, developing and using teaching cases, and writing books as part of your impact portfolio.

What to Expect

Keynote Speeches: Listen to leading experts who have successfully translated their research into impactful outcomes.

Presentations: Attendees will showcase their impact-driven work and receive constructive feedback from the panel of experts.

Interactive Sessions: Engage in hands-on sessions covering topics such as the effective communication of research, identifying areas of research with significant impact potential, and forging collaborations with industry.

Panel Discussions: Join discussions with a panel comprising both researchers, media professionals and practitioners to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with creating research that has a real-world impact.

Networking Opportunities: Connect with peers and established academics in the field.

• Deadline to submit your extended abstract and a letter explaining the main challenges you face in achieving impact from your research: June 27th 2025 by 5pm via email to Ilan Oshri (ilan.oshri@auckland.ac.nz)
• Deadline to register: July 15th, 2025 by 5pm via Eventbrite. Information how to register will be provided in the acceptance letter early July.

Fees

• Workshop registration fees: NZ$120
• Registration fees include 2 lunches, one workshop dinner and refreshments.

Extended Abstract (should not exceed 3 pages):

• Practical motivation for the research – ½ page
• A summary of the empirical evidence (in a form of a case) – 1 page
• The main findings and their significance in terms of current discourse in academic and practice outlets – ½ page
• Possible academic and professional outlets for this work - ½ page
