About this event

What is a Sewing Machine?

A sewing machine works by mechanically driving a needle to sew or stitch cloth or other textiles. It is typically used to join pieces of a textile together.

Before you book:

Please ensure you have completed the following steps before you book your in-person practice session.

Our equipment training process has recently changed. To make it easier for students and staff to use our equipment we have changed to blended learning.

This means equipment training is now two-part:

1. A ‘preparation module’

This consists of a short video, quiz and additional learning resources featured on Canvas. These modules have been curated to introduce you to the equipment and prepare you for an in-person practice session with our Maker Space Coordinator.

You must get 10/10 for our quiz and it can be repeated as many times as you need.

The preparation module must be completed before attending an in-person practice session. They can be completed anytime and are located here. You will need to sign in with your SSO credentials.

2. A 30min in-person practice session

For each in-person practice session you will be provided with a practical walkthrough by our Maker Space Coordinator. The purpose is to ensure you gain a practical understanding of how to operate the equipment. Once our Maker Space Coordinator is satisfied you are competent to safely operate the equipment you will receive a certification sticker on your membership badge.

Please note that all Maker Space sessions and events are only open to current University of Auckland staff and students.
