Event description
An insightful workshop that shows writers how they can develop resilience & productive writing habits by getting out of their own way.

About this Event

Writing is hard work...

And that's before we even get to the disappointments, rejection and challenges that ALL writers inevitably face no matter how good they are.

When you write, you are invariably always seeking external validation and approval whether it’s from family members, peers, a funding organisation or publisher. We're often at the mercy of external forces we can't control - so how do we stay motivated and focused?

Your ability to persevere, roll with punches and cultivate resilience is what sets you apart from writers who give up when the going gets tough. So how's your inner game?

Is your attitude and mindset helping or hindering your creative path? Does rejection or failure affect you for much longer than it should?Improve Your Inner Game is a half-day workshop designed to help writers improve their inner game to stay motivated and productive.

This workshop is for any writer creating fiction – no matter which genre. For newer writers it is the perfect follow up course for the Beginner’s Guide Writing Workshop: Creative Writing.

Facilitator: Kathryn Burnett

In this workshop you'll explore and learn how to deal with:

  • Failure
  • Self-Criticism
  • Self-Sabotage
  • Rejection
  • Self Doubt
  • Procrastination

You'll also learn how to develop:

  • Resilience
  • A growth mindset
  • Creative courage

Successful people are constantly upskilling - and as a writer, you need to do the same.

Think of this workshop as developing another skill set - i.e. mastering your inner self.

Jump in and dig deep.

Facilitator: Kathryn Burnett

Kathryn is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright who has worked in the NZ television/film industry for over 20 years. She runs the Writing Room and has coached numerous writers. She has significant television and film credits and has developed numerous television series for NZ’s major production companies. Her most recently produced TV projects include – “Fresh Eggs,” “The Sounds” and “The Cul de Sac.” She is also on the development team for an HBO sci-fi series and has a comedy series in development with Warner Brothers.

What people are saying:

“The June workshop was a thoroughly enjoyable two days with Kathryn. Learnt new things and was reminded of others – than you!” Emma Newborn – Actor

“Kathryn has a skill too many story consultants and teachers lack – the ability to listen attentively. This allows her to tune in to what the writer is doing and then offer finely tuned and individualized advice rather than generic formulas. In return she expects the writer to do some work on their ideas, not just sit back and wait to be told something. This is an approach that produces results.” Daniel Fleming – Professor of Screen & Media Studies, University of Waikato

“A great brainstorming session to sort out the ideas in your head. Thanks for starting my engine!” Jane Asbury

“I found Kathryn’s teaching rich and engaging. For a novice like myself it was very encouraging and I gained a wealth of insights and sense.” Frances Young – Psychologist and Educator

“Kept me writing notes and solving problems in my writing projects all day. Fascinating and very helpful!” Amy Paulussen – Writer

“Loved Kathryn’s relaxed and yet professional teaching style – great sense of humour and ability to communicated ideas clearly and concisely.” Katherine Smith – Data Entry Operator

"Kathryn Burnett is the bombdiggity. She brings amazing experience, intelligence, and passion to her teaching. She has a comprehensive understanding of movies, cinema history, and storytelling technique, and is effective and engaging when sharing that knowledge with her students. Kathryn is to storytelling tutors as Carlos the Jackal is to international assassins. I can't recommend her highly enough." Steve Barr - screenwriter, producer, and development executive

“Kathryn's screenwriting workshop was brilliant. I loved learning from her and would sit at the front of the class, furiously jotting down notes like a nerd. Kathryn has a natural ability to connect with an audience. She teaches with patience and humour and she provides cake for morning tea! I'd recommend the workshop for anyone wanting to learn more about screenwriting.” Jaquie Brown – Presenter, Actor, Screenwriter

"Loved it! Kathryn gets straight to the point and gives clear, practical advice about screenwriting. She demystifies the process." Rebecca Barry Hill - Journalist/Screenwriter

I’m interested in screenwriting – is this for me?

If you’re a brand new writer this is a great foundation course for all forms of writing. But I would definitely combine it with my two-day Beginner’s Guide Writing Workshop: Creative Writing.
