Brain Awareness Month: Arrowtown

The Neurological Foundation is an independent body and charitable trust that raises funds to ensure this country’s top neuroscientists can continue leading-edge research into neurological disorders. Our mission is to alleviate suffering from diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system through research and education.We share a vision with these scientists: to progress research so that significant advances can be made in the prevention and cure of neurological disorders. One day, this will greatly reduce the level of suffering and premature death from diseases of the brain and nervous system. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and motor neurone diseases, stroke, multiple sclerosis, migraine, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury are just a few of the wide spectrum of disorders that are the focus of the research we fund. These disorders are brutal and uncompromising, and with the rapid growth of New Zealand’s ageing population, an epidemic of neurodegenerative disorders is predicted in the coming decades.

If you are unable to make it to our morning presentation in Queenstown, please join us for a repeat event in Arrowtown in the evening with Professor Tim Anderson and Dr Tracy Melzer.You’re invited to learn about the many wonders and marvels of the human brain during Brain Awareness Month. By donating to the Neurological Foundation, you can become an advocate for the research these scientists and clinicians are undertaking, and we would like to invite you to attend a presentation in Queenstown by Professor Tim Anderson and Dr Tracy Melzer. Professor Tim Anderson, Clinical Director of the New Zealand Brain Research Institution (NZBRI) will discuss research developments within in Parkinson’s disease, one of the fastest growing neurological disorders worldwide. The New Zealand Brain Research Institute has estimated that 1% of New Zealanders over 60 years of age have Parkinson’s with some 10,000 people affected and this figure will double by 2040.Dr Tracy Melzer, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) Research Manager at the New Zealand Brain Research Institution will discuss his exciting research including the role he has in the longitudinal Parkinson’s disease study and what the future holds for this study and for neuroimaging.There will be a mix and mingle with refreshments prior to the event from 5.30 - 6.30 pm.The event will begin promptly at 6.30 with a 45 minute presentation and concluding with an opportunity for audience members to ask questions after the presentation.Parking is available onsite, but it is on a first come, first serve basis.Tickets are free, but registration is required to ensure you reserve a seat.
