Brain research in real time

The Neurological Foundation is an independent body and charitable trust that raises funds to ensure this country’s top neuroscientists can continue leading-edge research into neurological disorders. Our mission is to alleviate suffering from diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system through research and education.We share a vision with these scientists: to progress research so that significant advances can be made in the prevention and cure of neurological disorders. One day, this will greatly reduce the level of suffering and premature death from diseases of the brain and nervous system. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and motor neurone diseases, stroke, multiple sclerosis, migraine, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury are just a few of the wide spectrum of disorders that are the focus of the research we fund. These disorders are brutal and uncompromising, and with the rapid growth of New Zealand’s ageing population, an epidemic of neurodegenerative disorders is predicted in the coming decades.

This event will introduce audience members to the exciting work Dr Juliette Cheyne of Auckland University is conducting on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Cheyne’s research focuses on recording brain activity in rodents. She looks specifically at how brain cells interact with one another which give researchers a better understanding of how these two conditions progress within humans.Directions and parkingForum North is located on Rust Avenue in the middle of the Whangarei CBD next to the Old Library.There are two public entrances into Forum North. The front access is via Rust Avenue, where the Whangarei District Council Customer Service Centre is located and near the Library and the other off the Water Street carpark. Meet Dr Juliette CheyneDr Juliette Cheyne completed her Biomedical Science degree, Honours and PhD at the University of Auckland, then moved to Amsterdam for six years as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2016 she returned to the University of Auckland with a Neurological Foundation Repatriation Fellowship. Dr Cheyne is now a semi-independent research fellow who co-supervises three PhD students and one postdoctoral fellow. Her research focuses on imaging brain cell activity in mouse models of disease including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.
