Navigating the Clinical Input Process in Medical Device Development: A Panel Discussion

Obtaining clinical input is essential for the successful development of medical technologies. Engaging with relevant clinicians can ensure that a product addresses a common pain point, is effective, and meets the needs of the end user. These are steps that should be undertaken early in the development process, but can be difficult if you don’t yet have clinical contacts to call upon.Join us for a panel discussion focused on helping MedTech developers navigate this process for clinical input and validation. Our expert panel will share their insights and experiences on clinician engagement with the opportunity for you to ask your questions too. Time: Thursday March 30th, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm Location: Online (Zoom)S﻿peakers:H﻿elen Lunt. Diabetes Physician and Clinical Associate Professor. H﻿elen is a specialist physician. She has been an active clinical researcher for more than 30 years and has worked with the Via Innovations team at Te Whatu Ora Waitaha / Canterbury for over 10 years. She has also helped mentor a range of clinicians. Sometimes this mentoring role includes advising clinicians about optimising the amount of time and energy they spend and helping non-clinical innovators develop their own clinical insights. Her career has therefore given her an understanding about approaches to clinician engagement, that allow both the innovator and the clinician to feel as though they can come away from a dialogue or project with enhanced knowledge and insights. D﻿r Aniva Lawrence. Mahitahi Hauora General Practice. D﻿r Aniva Lawrence, FRNZCGP is a Samoan GP based in Northland. She has a sub-interest in Adolescent health and equity having done research around gout medical access previously. She has been a clinical director of primary care in Northland, has chaired the National Advisory Committee for the RNZCGP and is currently vice chair of the RNZCGP Pasefika chapter. She is also currently Academic co-ordinator of the Northland Clinical Campus for the University of Auckland. D﻿r Stephen Inns. Te Whatu Ora Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley.S﻿tephen is the medical lead - research in Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley District. He is a Gastroenterologist at Hutt Hospital and is also the Aotearoa New Zealand President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He has a background in leading clinical research and building strong research teams. He set up the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research unit at Hutt Hospital and has acted as Principal Investigator for 16 years in over 20 international clinical trials. He also works as a senior clinical lecturer for the Otago University Wellington school of medicine and in that role has built strong research teams, investigating diverse aspects of gut health. He has supervised multiple PhD students, including Senior Medical Officers taking up research as consultants. He is very active in the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students both for the university and the RACP
