Artificial intelligence is influencing doctoral research across many disciplines.

As doctoral candidates begin experimenting with AI tools for tasks such as literature exploration, data analysis, and writing support, questions about responsible use, ethical boundaries, and good research practice are becoming increasingly important.Panellists will reflect on how AI is shaping doctoral research practices in their disciplines, followed by an open discussion in which participants can raise questions, share experiences, and consider the opportunities and challenges AI introduces to doctoral research.The session is open to doctoral candidates from all faculties, including those already using AI tools and those who are still considering how these tools may fit within their research practices. Bringing together perspectives from different disciplines creates an opportunity to reflect on how responsible AI use may look across diverse research contexts. PanellistsDr Heidi Collins leads the Doctoral Experience team in the School of Graduate Studies. Her work centres on doctoral development and researcher development, supporting doctoral candidates and supervisors across the University of Auckland.Associate Professor Sean Sturm is in the School of Education and Social Practice in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Their research explores higher education, academic development, and critical perspectives on teaching and learning in universities.Logan Mickel is a PhD student in Education researching the impact of artificial intelligence on critical thinking, with a focus on medical professionals. He previously taught university courses in argumentation and composition in the United States for 12 years.Dr Guy Bate is Thematic Lead for Artificial Intelligence and a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland Business School. He focuses on the use of AI in education and management, particularly in supporting student engagement and self-directed learning.Dr Jay Gong is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Auckland. His work explores the use of artificial intelligence in health and education apps and profession-based research, alongside research on medication use and patient outcomes.
