HIV stigma and discrimination damages Māori and whānau

He Kai Ata Rau is a significant hui for anyone wanting to end the stigma and discrimination experienced by self, friends, whānau, clients, or colleagues.

This is a must-attend event if you work in a government agency, health service, education, or are a community advocate, and want strategies and resources to end stigma and discrimination.

Reducing HIV stigma and discrimination was a priority target set by the landmark national conference ‘Whai Māramatanga, Whai Oranga: Māori and HIV/AIDS’, Papakura Marae, Auckland in March 1995.

Two decades on, Māori living with HIV state that HIV stigma and discrimination is still an obstacle to diagnosis, treatment and prevention, as well as limiting the quality of life for themselves, partners and whānau.

Physical and verbal abuse, social distancing and exclusion, and weakened whanaungatanga are the result of HIV stigma and discrimination. This can lead to depression, suicide, self-harm, poor decision-making around safer sex, and the uptake of HIV testing and treatment.

He Kai Ata Rau attendees will:

  • Increase their knowledge of the issues and impact of HIV stigma and discrimination
  • Connect with knowledge experts to tailor their own programmes and resources
  • Get a toolkit of Māori strengths-based strategies
  • Be champions to end HIV stigma and discrimination in schools, workplaces, marae, sports clubs, and communities.
