Hives, Mites & the Future of Bees
Date and time
With drug resistant varroa mite on the rise, what will happen to our bees? What can we do? See a beehive check live & listen to a talk.
About this event
To celebrate World Bee Day on 20 May, we are bringing you another Sustainability Series workshop on Wed 18 May from 12 – 1pm.
Commercial Bay is lucky to have three thriving beehives on our airbridge and you’ll have the unique opportunity to watch beekeeper Jessie Baker from Bees Up Top check the hives from 12 – 12:15pm.
However, did you know that without human intervention, most bee colonies would collapse within 1-2 years and without bees, the human food supply chain would collapse? This is because of the varroa mite which is becoming increasingly resistant to current pesticides. The NZ company Pheromite has patented a novel varroa mite treatment with the potential to provide beekeepers with a new tool. Is that enough?
Listen to Pheromite’s founder, Dr Pablo German, as he discusses The Future Of Bees. There will also be time for questions with both speakers at the end, as well as a chance to sample our Commercial Bay honey.
Places are limited so book early.
