Janis Carroll-Lind

Dr Janis Carroll-Lind’s journey in education has been diverse and enriching, spanning various roles and responsibilities that have shaped her professional path and personal growth. Throughout her teaching career, Janis worked in a range of positions and locations—as a primary school teacher, early childhood teacher, Resource Teacher Special Needs, and as a teacher of children with behavioural challenges. In the tertiary sector, she taught across the initial teacher education, graduate, and postgraduate programmes at Massey University College of Education, mainly in the areas of inclusive education and mentor teaching. After more than a decade at Massey, Janis moved to Wellington as the Principal Advisor (Education) at the Office of the Children’s Commissioner. Then returning to teacher education, her immediate past role was Director of Research and Postgraduate Programmes at Te Rito Maioha.

Over the years Janis has held a range of leadership roles, some accidental, some not so accidental, but it has been her own teaching background that really launched her into leadership research and development work. Much of that mahi has involved developing and teaching PLD and qualification programmes on leadership for teachers, both in New Zealand and Australia. She feels privileged with the opportunities she has been given to enhance the leadership capability of teachers.

Right now, Janis is enjoying semi-retirement as an independent contractor/consultant in education—where currently her best ‘job’ is volunteer teacher-aiding in her granddaughter’s Year 3 class!

Dr Janis Carroll-Lind will explore the principles and practices for effective change management within educational settings, offering insights on how to design, implement, and sustain curriculum changes while engaging all stakeholders. Teachers play a pivotal role in leading curriculum implementation and can embrace and embody leadership when equipped with the necessary relational and communication tools to become agents of change.
