Event description
Manioro is a 3-part series of creative events designed to cultivate creativity as an outlet & healing way of dealing with distress.

About this event

Manioro is made possible thanks to sponsorship from Spark. Manioro is hosted by Nevertheless NZ . We are a Maori/Pasifika led Mental Health/Self Love small business (www.neverthelessnz.com).

The word 'Manioro' means to cause a disturbance, to disrupt or make a noise. Our kaupapa is based on using creativity as a tool to disrupt unhealthy narratives and disturb stereotypes or introjected values such as "men don't cry". We are teaching Takatapui how to channel any negativity, homophobia, discrimination or distress they may feel into creativity. Creativity is part of our whakapapa. Our ancestors used oriori (lullaby), moteamotea (chants), waiata (song), haka (war-dance) and other methods of creativity as vessels to pass down important stories. Our 3-part series of creative events is all about tapping into one's creativity and using creativity as a healthy outlet and way of dealing with Mental Health struggles. We are using Ta Mason Duries Te Whare Tapa Wha, well-being framework as our foundation.

REGISTER TO PERFORM AT OPEN MIC HERE

Part 1/3 We start with our Karanga Moana - Open Mic - we invite you to share your story by whatever creative means you prefer - raw, unplugged, music, dance, poetry, story telling. It will be a safe space. We ask people to register beforehand to ensure we have performance needs. Fridays 4th & 18th Feb 7pm-9pm.

Part 2/3 Following the open-mic night we have our Wananga - Workshops. Our workshops are based on Te Whare Tapa Wha - Taha Tinana (Dance/Weaving), Taha Wairua (Music/ Songwriting), Taha Hinengaro (Poetry), Taha Whanau (Storytelling). Keep up with our social media to see which workshops are available on either Saturday 5th & 19th Feb 10am - 2pm.

Part 3/3 Manioro Exhibition. Our vision is to redefine the way people view and validate themselves. We want to destigmatize Mental Health by encouraging Self-Love as a Priority. Our exhibition will be personal and intimate.

All events will take place at the Albert Park Caretaker's cottage - the Dance workshop is on the 5th Feb and will take place at the HIT dance studio.

We look forward to seeing you at Manioro!
