About this event
Kānapanapa mai ana a Matariki
We invite you to a very special opportunity to listen to the korero and knowledge of Rikki Solomon as we herald the start of Māori New Year in Pipiri at dawn, and the rise of Matariki.
Rikki Solomon of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa will lead us in karakia and share his knowledge of Maramataka. He holds a Masters in Applied Indigenous Knowledge and Doctorate of Indigenous Development and Advancement focused on Insights into Maramataka, the traditional Māori practice of teaching and using knowledge of the star systems, moon cycles, tides and environment, and its relation to suicide. His mahi includes work with at risk rangatahi and mental health.
Hāpuku School will provide a free hot breakfast. Our own Brian Horsfall, astronomer and member of the Kaikōura Dark Skies Trust will provide a telescope for close up viewings of the dark morning sky. There is limited parking, so we will shuttle to and from Hāpuku School to Māngāmaunu Marae from 5am. Please register so we can cater and provide transport.
