The right to language is a fundamental human right. It also plays a crucial role in the realisation of other rights, such as rights to culture and identity. 
The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) states that indigenous peoples have the right to “revitalize, use, develop and transmit to future generations” their languages, and that governments shall take steps to protect these rights. 
Almost 10 years on from the Declaration’s adoption – and 30 years since te reo Māori became an official language of this country – how is this right being realised in Aotearoa New Zealand, and what more needs to be done to protect it? 
On 13 February 2017 come to hear a panel of expert speakers discuss these issues. This forum is part of a series of events hosted by the Human Rights Commission, leading up to the 10th anniversary of the UNDRIP.
