About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours 30 minutes

How do we cope? We cry. Pop pills. Make art. Watch horror movies.

Join us at The Dowse as we explore themes of escapism with a day of drop-in activations. Choose to step out of your comfort zone, or lean deep into the cosiness. Embrace the strange and grotesque, sculpting your very own “ugly babies” with artist Iann An. Craft your personalised prescription, making polymer clay “pills” based on Brad Logan Heappey’s work. Curl up under a blanket and get knitting. Zone out to YouTube playlists or video games. Get a flash tattoo.

What coping mechanism, healthy or unhealthy, do you use to survive contemporary life? Do you disassociate, create vivid imaginary worlds to inhabit, take on the mannerisms of an alter ego, dive deep into pop culture black holes, put together ever more specific playlists, or take to nature? Step into The Dowse and check out of the pressures of everyday life for a day.
