A six week course for parents of children aged 5 to 17.

About this event

Parenting can be both a joy and very hard work.

But things get in the way of us being the parents we want to be - including our own thoughts and feelings. These can be about ourselves, about our children, about our parenting, or about what others think about our parenting.

Your Parenting ACT is a 6 week course for parents of school aged children where you can develop a strong foundation for your parenting.  It helps you understand your child, develop your self, nurture your relationship with your child and parent in line with your values.  It uses principles from ACT — Acceptance and Commitment Training — to help you make room for all your thoughts and feelings, so you can respond more calmly and flexibly as a parent.

ACT uses acceptance, mindfulness and behavioural strategies to help people pursue what matters most to them, including being the parent they want to be.

The course is held over six consecutive Monday evenings from the 31st of October to the 12th of December, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. There is no course on the 28th of November.

We understand that sometimes things get in the way of plans, and occasionally people can't make a night of the course. But it is essential that parents attend the first night of the course in order to take part in the remaining sessions. Parents can't alternate attendance between them or fill in for each other if they are unable to attend.

Giselle Bahr is a clinical psychologist working in Wellington who continues to parent two adult children. She works primarily with young people and their families in private practice.  Before that she spent 15 years working in Wellington's public health system and teaching in a university clinical training programme.

Robyn Langlands is a clinical psychologist and mother of a spirited 7-year-old boy. She has worked in maternal mental health, in a child and adolescent mental health service, and with adults in private practice. Learning about, and implementing, ACT principles and practices has enriched both her clinical work and personal life, and she looks forward to sharing this approach with group members.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

To find out more or to ask any questions please ring or email us at and 027 567 4496.

Do we need to attend as a parenting couple?

The course is designed so that any individual parent can take part and apply the skills to their parenting.  It is not necessary for parents to attend the course together.  Each person attending needs to register individually, and must attend the first week in order to attend the rest of the course.

Where can I park?

The #1 bus route, which travels from Island Bay to Johnsonville, stops very close to the Berhampore Centennial Community Centre.

There are five HNZ parks, numbered NHZ1to HNZ5, on the right hand side of the driveway as you enter, in front of the garages.  There are for users of the Community Centre.  Parking is also available on Adelaide Rd and the side streets off Adelaide Rd.
